Have you ever wondered what actually makes an app feel smooth, intuitive, and enjoyable to use?

It’s rarely an accident. Behind every seamless tap, swipe, and scroll is a UI/UX designer who spent hours researching user habits, mapping out wireframes, and testing prototypes.

In 2021, Afro-Tech Girls teamed up with IHS Nigeria to launch a 4-month virtual UI/UX Design Training. We wanted to give 31 selected young women a direct runway into product design, a space where female voices and perspectives are needed now more than ever.

The Journey: From Blank Canvas to Job-Ready

For 16 fast-paced weeks, our cohort plunged into the end-to-end product design lifecycle. Using Figma as their primary workbench, they tackled everything required to go from concept to launch:

  • Empathy & Strategy: Conducting real user research, mapping persona journeys, and using design thinking to solve complex product problems.

  • Structure & Style: Translating ideas into structural wireframes and building out polished, interactive digital prototypes.

  • Professional Prep: Learning directly from guest speakers in the tech industry, receiving portfolio critiques, and completing individual capstone projects.

Crossing the Finish Line

By the end of the program, 27 dedicated participants successfully completed their final capstone projects, walking away with comprehensive job-ready  portfolios for entry-level UI/UX roles.
