"I just wanted to try something new"

That’s how it often begins. Not with a master plan, but with a quiet nudge to say yes to something different. For one member of our Afro Tech Girls community, that “yes” led her from studying chemistry to writing code, earning a Scrum certification, and landing a role as an analyst in the energy sector.
She didn’t have it all figured out from the start. But she stayed curious, leaned on community, and took one step after another ,until things started to make sense.
So grab a moment for yourself, and let her story remind you: sometimes, clarity comes after the leap.
What's your full name?
Gospel .E. Onyebuchukwu
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you do in the STEM space?
I am chemist who transitioned into frontend software development and with the help of this skill transition, I got a role as an analyst with a company that sells power to customers to enable them power their equipment and system.
How did you first hear about Afro Tech Girls?
I had about Afrotech girls in 2024 from a tech community where I belong. Someone shared an opportunity to be trained in Scrum by Afro tech Girls which I leveraged on, got trained, it was paid for by ATG and the organisation they affiliated to and I was certified. That training changed me a lot and helped my understanding on how I approach work within a team.
What initiative or program did you take part in with Afro Tech Girls?
I participated in the Scrum training they offered in partnership with another organization. It was fully sponsored, and I got certified at the end. That program really shaped how I now work within a team and manage projects, definitely one of the highlights of my growth in tech.
What was that experience like for you? (Any standout moment you still remember?)
That training changed me a lot and helped my understanding on how I approach work within a team.
Did you face any challenges before joining, and did the initiative help with that?
I have had several trainings in frontend and anticipated an internship or job offer but didn't get. However, the Scrum training I did by Afrotech Girls helped in opening door to my current job and I'm thankful to God and Afrotech Girls.
How has being part of Afro Tech Girls impacted your journey in tech/STEM?
The Scrum training I did by ATG helped in opening door to my current job and I'm thankful to God and Afrotech Girls.
Have you learned or achieved something you’re proud of since then?
Yes, the transition into tech and the job role I currently occupy as an analyst.
Did the initiative help you meet new people or open new doors for you?
Yes, it opened the door to my current role and has connected me to more women in tech like me
What would you say to other young women thinking of joining Afro Tech Girls?
If you're thinking of joining Afrotech Girls, wait no more. Just go ahead because it's a community that fosters growth and advancement. I have personally recommended ladies to join Afrotech Girls community because it's a platform that would help their career growth and building of their personality. I am not just singing the praise of this community but I'm talking from the experience and positive impact this community has made on me. And at this point I want to say big thank you to the founders and community manager of Afrotech Girls.
