3 years ago, I didn’t know what UI/UX was. Today, it’s my career.

A single recommendation. That’s all it took to open the door!

That’s how Oluwajefunmi describes her journey into tech. What started with a friend’s recommendation turned into multiple life-changing opportunities through Afro-Tech Girls.

From being selected for the UI/UX Design Training (powered by Afro-Tech Girls in partnership with IHS Nigeria) to becoming a two-time recipient of the Project 100 for20 Scholarship, Funmi has taken full advantage of every resource to shape her future.

The UI/UX program was a virtual, hands-on, 4-month workshop designed to equip young women with job-ready design skills. Beyond that, she benefited from our Frontend Development training and other internal programs that build practical skills and community.

Our Project 100 for20 initiative also gave her a financial lifeline when she needed it the most. The initiative supported 20 young women studying STEM courses with ₦100,000 each, helping them cover tuition.

Now, we caught up with Funmi to hear about her journey, growth, and what Afro-Tech Girls really meant to her.

How did you first hear about Afro-Tech Girls?

I discovered Afro -Tech Girls through a friend in school while I was actively searching for platforms to learn tech skills.

Which of our programs have you been a part of?

I’ve participated in several programs, including the UI/UX training in partnership with IHS, Frontend Development, and Project 100 for 20 (twice), among others I can’t fully recall at the moment.

What has the experience been like for you overall?

The experience has been truly wholesome. The UI/UX and Frontend Development trainings laid the foundation for my journey in tech. It gave me a solid start, and I’m still building on that path today. The scholarship program was also a major support during two critical times when I needed financial assistance, something I’ll always be grateful for 🙏.

Did you face any challenges before joining?

No, I didn’t face any challenges before joining.

Was there a moment or program that felt like a turning point for you?

As I briefly mentioned earlier, the UI/UX training was a turning point for me. I was first introduced to the field through Afro-Tech Girls, and now, with about three years of experience, I work as a UI/UX designer, a role I’m truly passionate about. Learning Frontend Development from the ATG community was an added advantage that has strengthened my skill set.

Would you say your involvement opened doors for you?

Yes, definitely. My UI/UX skills have created opportunities for me, both as a student and now as a recent graduate.

Did you make any meaningful connections or friendships through our community?

I’d say the platform opened more doors for me beyond just meeting new people. While I did reconnect and build stronger bonds with people I already knew, I also had the chance to meet incredible individuals, including the community leader, who has been truly inspiring.

Would you recommend Afro-Tech Girls to someone else?

Absolutely, I highly recommend it! Words can’t fully express how much I’ve gained from this initiative. Reflecting now, it’s incredible to see how I went from knowing nothing about tech to becoming a confident tech sis

One thing you’ve learned through this journey?

That we’re capable of far more than people give us credit for.

Funmi’s story is just one of many. If you’re looking to start your own journey or take the next step, there’s a space for you here too.
