There’s something magical about a room filled with women who are unapologetically owning their space and sharing their stories. That’s exactly what the ATG International Women’s Day Lunch Celebration felt like, a beautiful reminder of how powerful we are when we come together. While International Women’s Day may have passed, the energy and inspiration from that day are still very much alive. And as we continue to celebrate Women’s History Month, it feels like the perfect time to reflect on the moments that made the event so special. A Call to Action: “Take, Don’t Just Give” One of the most resonant moments of the day came from Olumide Balogun, Country Manager of Google West Africa. He challenged us to rethink how we approach International Women’s Day. Instead of just talking and taking pictures, he urged us to take action, advocate for more women in STEM, push for leadership roles, and create opportunities for the next generation. Then he said something that stuck with me:“Have a mindset of someone who wants to take rather than give.” At first, it felt a little counterintuitive. As women, we’re often taught to give our time, our energy, our ideas, sometimes to the point of exhaustion. But Olumide’s message was a wake-up call: it’s time to take our seat at the table. To own our ambitions, claim our space, and unapologetically go after what we deserve. It’s not about being selfish; it’s about recognizing our worth and stepping into our power. From Digital Access to Tech Leadership: A Panel That Lit a Fire The panel session, “From Digital Access to Tech Leadership,” was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the day. Moderated by the brilliant Temiloluwa Makanjuola, Strategic Advisor for Afro Tech Girls, the conversation was raw, real, and deeply empowering. Our incredible panelists, Ugochi Agoreyo (Partnership Lead, Google Sub-Saharan Africa), Felicia Okoye Otolorin (Head, Financial Services Industry at Google West Africa), Temitope Akintola (Backend Engineer at Moniepoint), and Florence Egwu (Backend Engineer at Moniepoint) shared their journeys, struggles, and triumphs. Here are some gems that stayed with me: • Advocate for Yourself: Don’t wait for someone to notice your hard work. Speak up, own your wins, and make your ambitions known. • Your Work Speaks for You: Excellence is your best advocate. Consistently deliver quality, and your reputation will open doors. • Find Your Tribe: A mentor or sponsor can be a game-changer. Surround yourself with people who believe in you and will push you forward. • Break the Bias: As women in tech, we often face unique challenges. But as Felicia reminded us, “Your uniqueness is your superpower. Use it to stand out.” The session wasn’t just about sharing stories, it was a call to action. A reminder that while the road to leadership isn’t always easy, it’s absolutely possible. And necessary. Networking Bingo: Building Genuine Connections The Networking Bingo activity was a hit, giving everyone a chance to break the ice and connect in a fun, relaxed way. It was amazing to see so many conversations flowing naturally, whether you were sharing career tips, swapping stories, or simply getting to know someone new. It was a reminder that sometimes, the best connections happen when we let our guard down and just enjoy the moment. Gratitude to Our Incredible Supporters This event wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our amazing sponsors, Google and Moniepoint, who are committed to creating opportunities for women in tech. We’re also deeply grateful to the team behind the scenes, Oluwaseun Oladeji, Emioluwa Opaluwa, and Temiloluwa Makanjuola for their hard work and dedication. And of course, a heartfelt thank you to our co-founders, Yvonne Allanah Ndu, Adeola Shasanya, and Morenike Adewale-Sadik for their vision and leadership. This community wouldn’t be what it is without you. What’s Next? Opportunities Just for You! "Learning is not a race, but a journey to be savored.”- Unknown The recent Teach Your Community event was a resounding success, featuring a captivating panel discussion moderated by the Community Manager, Oladeji Oluwaseun. The event brought together the beneficiaries of the Afro Tech Girls x IHS Tableau program, Adeyinka Daboh and Mba Chinenye, who shared their invaluable insights into the transformative power of Tableau and the importance of consistent learning. Having discovered the importance of a portfolio in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) profession, we hosted an event tagged "How to create a portfolio using WordPress" on the 4th of September, 2022. Omowunmi Olawehinmi a Product designer with over a year experience creating user-centred designs and a member of the YALI Network and the Women Techsters Fellow '2 shared a practical example of how a portfolio gives you a dedicated personal space to promote your skills, services and previous work which could also be referred to as your shop window on the internet , that is after you build your portfolio site, potential clients will be able to easily find you, see exactly what you do, learwhowhat whou offer and feel confident in hiring you. The practical session centred on designing a portfolio and deploying WordPress. To design a portfolio, it is necessary to select the best website. The Envira Photobuilder tool which was used in building the portfolio displays your work dynamically online and doesn’t require extensive coding. This is why word press is highly recommended because it helps in creating a responsive website, after which selecting a domain name and other necessary steps follow. Remember, having a portfolio will empower you to look more professional and distinct from everyone else, build a brand that represents the value you propose and Impress prospects who are looking to hire you. If you missed it or would like a recap on all that was taught, kindly click the recording below to watch the session here
