Like you may know, our STEM mentorship program for secondary girls kicked off on June 4th, 2016 with orientation. We exceeded our target by having total number of 17 girls on the program with a 1x1 mentor pairing bringing the total number of participants to 34.
The Orientation program was quite exciting as the mentors got to meet their mentee, insights from participants an team member on the importance of Mentoring and proper on boarding of participants with the framework and guidelines of the program. The event was also graced by one the one the members of the our Advisory board, Dr Omobola Johnson who emphasized the importance of hardwork to succeed as a female in a male dominated field
The program is 6-month long structured with monthly themed meet-ups and virtual interaction in between. So far, we have had 3 meetings in addition to the orientation program
June - Self Awareness: This was considered necessary as a kick off theme because it was important that the girls learn about their uniqueness and how to hone it to their advantage
July - Introducing the Career Woman: The girls had the opportunity to learn from 4 female professionals selected to be a part of the Panel discussion on 'Challenges and Benefits of being a female in STEM'. The 4 speakers were: Feyi Alayande of First Bank of Nigeria, Tolu Owokade of Main One Service, Kemi Olaosebokan and Joke Akanmu of the University of Lagos Health center
There was also a hands on session with the Andela Ladies who taught the girls how to code a website design using HTML and CSS language
Coming up in August is Self Promotion. The girls would get an etiquette and CV workshop and we can't wait to share with you the experiences and insights from the session.
