In recent times, Blockchain has been hugely important for business and the technology is continuously evolving. The next decade is going to be the decade of block chain technology as the normal financial transaction practices will begin to diminish with digital currency such as Bitcoin and Blockchain taking the front seat.
African Girls in Science and Technology Initiative (Afro-Tech Girls) having seen its relevance kicked off its workshop series under the ATG Educate series with a training on Block chain and Crypto-currency in collaboration with Everlaw Foundation, a CSR initiative of Everlaw Associates and GCL hub, an IT hub and co-working space for professionals and entrepreneurs.
Our mission at Afro-Tech Girls is to encourage, educate and empower African girls of secondary and university levels in the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields to follow through and achieve whatever goals they set for themselves through mentorship, teamwork, creativity and innovation.
The Blockchain and Crypto-currency training for girls aged 10 - 18 was structured to create awareness on the technology to help them make wise investment options and prevent them from falling prey to spoof crypto-currency investments. The workshop took place on the 30th of March, 2019 at The GCL Hub, Allen Avenue, Ikeja with 15 female students in attendance.
Our facilitator, Miss Faith Obafemi introduced the girls to blockchain, it’s features, types, models, challenges, use cases, regulations, possible career path and the future of blockchain. She also introduced them to crypto-currency which is a decentralized system based on the blockchain technology. At the end of the class, they were given an activity to create a crypto-wallet.
Towards the end of the program, our guest speaker and sponsor, Barrister Marx Ikongbeh, Principal at Everlaw Associates had a session with the girls on Intellectual property and protection of rights in Technology creating an awareness on the legal rights within the STEM fields . The workshop was well attended by guests and Afro-Tech Girls volunteers.
