On the 31st of January 2015, the maiden edition of the Afro-Tech Girls Sciletes (pronounced sai-leets) Quiz Competition took place in the Eko Lab of Akande Dahunsi Memorial Senior Secondary School, Lagos. Five schools in the Osborne Complex, Ikoyi participated: Akande Dahunsi Memorial, Wahab Folawiyo, Ilado Community College, Government College Maroko and Government College Ikoyi.
The aim of the competition was to create a fun and stimulating environment for the girls to show off their competence in Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics while emphasising the value of teamwork. Teams competed against each other in pairs and each team had the opportunity to compete with all the others. Points were tallied on an overall score board; 3 points for winning, 1 point for drawing and zero points for losing. In the intermission, there was an interactive session by Miss Susan Onigbinde, founder of Designs by Dodo, a graphic design company that specialises in branding. At the end of the round robin style competition and after a thrilling knock out stage, the team from Wahab Folawiyo emerged as winners, closely followed by Ilado Community High School in second place and Akande Dahunsi Memorial in third place.
At the end of the competition, our sponsors and other volunteers presented prizes to the girls on the winning teams.
